Despite its name, which means "emperor lizard," Basilosaurus was a fully aquatic mammal. It had a long, serpentine body, vestigial hind limbs, and front flippers that were not fully evolved for modern swimming. Basilosaurus moved in an undulating manner through the water and likely couldn't dive deeply, playing a significant role in the marine ecosystems of its time.
